“Call to Me, I Will Answer You” January 22, 2017
Prisons are miserable places where despair can settle over one’s soul just as the dampness chills the body. Many of God’s choicest servants were in prison – Joseph, Jeremiah, the apostle Paul and Jesus. Prisons were a place of reflection and where God revealed Himself to Jeremiah while in prison. . CALL TO ME!
I. The Revelation of Mystery –
A. Jeremiah is no cynic like today’s prophets because God shows him the end of what He will do!!
1. He doesn’t speculate about events. He declares God’s purposes
2. Today, news reporters are commentators who are supposedly experts and are sarcastically referred to as “pundits” in this post-truth era. We have gone from post-Christian to post-modern to post-truth
3. They are more cynics who see through things only to see nothing
B. Those who call on the Lord
1. God shows great and mighty things which you would never know on your own –
2. Think about Joseph prophesying the future of Egypt to Pharaoh
3. Or Daniel revealing Nebuchadnezzar’s future
4. God’s Word reveals the mysterious future –
C. The immediate tribulation is the destruction of Jerusalem –
II. Hope –
A. Healing and health
1. God will bring peace and truth –
2. The captives will return and rebuild the city –
B. I will cleanse them of sin –
1. Not sins but sin nature inherited from Adam –
2. From original sin proceed all actual sins
– Westminster Confession of Faith – Chapter 6.3 ,4, 6
III. They being the root of all mankind, the guilt of this sin was imputed; and the same death in sin, and corrupted nature, conveyed to all their posterity descending from them by ordinary generation.
IV. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions.
VI. Every sin, both original and actual, being a transgression of the righteous law of God, and contrary thereunto, does in its own nature, bring guilt upon the sinner, whereby he is bound over to the wrath of God, and curse of the law, and so made subject to death, with all miseries spiritual, temporal, and eternal.
3. God will pardon all their sins (iniquities) against Him
C. Jerusalem will be rebuilt –
1. As a city of worship and joy
2. The nations will hear of all the good that God will do for them
3. Jerusalem will be a “praise in all the earth” –
4. God will gather the outcasts of Israel –
D. The blessings of the renewed city –
1. Weddings – vision and forgiveness essential to marriage –
– not marriage as an emotional relationship but covenantal marriage –
2. Worship – the sacrifice of praise –
3. Abundant food –
III. God is Zealous for Zion – – How?
A. I will perform My promises –
1. I will perform My covenant to David –
2. David will have His Son to rule on David’s throne – ;
3. Jerusalem will know what will make for her peace –
B. The Son of David will make an end of sin and transgressions –
1. The renewed city of Jerusalem will be ruled by the Son of David, the Prince of Peace –
2. The Lord our righteousness shall accomplish this –
Jesus Christ rules and reigns today on David’s throne and He has established His Temple – the church as one new man to praise Him –
